宮城県気仙沼市の南部、南三陸町との堺、太平洋を見下ろす小高い丘の上にあるオイカワデニム。　もとは呉服屋を営んでいたが、昭和５６年にジーンズの縫製事業を起業し、６２年に有限会社を設立した。 アメリカに20年寝かされていた生地を使って501本の「リーバイス501」を製造したのは実はオイカワデニム。また強度の強い麻糸によるジーンズの縫製を業界ではじめて可能にするなど、経験と技術に裏打ちされた質の高いモノづくりを行っている。

平成１７年に自社ブランド「ＳＴＵＤＩＯ　ＺＥＲＯ（スタジオ・ゼロ）」を立ち上げた。国内では自社ブランドとＯＥＭの競合という難問があったが、１８年に東京で営業活動していた及川常務が偶然出会ったイタリアのバイヤーから「お前のはいているジーンズはどこのだ」と問われ、及川常務は自社製を強調。そのバイヤーに誘われ、翌１９年にイタリアの展示会に出展し、目の肥えた世界各国のバイヤーに品質の高さが認められた。これで海外展開の道が開かれ、ピーク時には伊、独、露など６カ国で４０店舗と取引があった。 　スタジオ・ゼロは生地から製品まで全て日本人が携わる純粋な「Ｍａｄｅ　ｉｎ　Ｊａｐａｎ」。このモノづくりにこだわった優れたスキルが伝わった。

２０１１年３月の震災で同社も被害を受けた。商品を保存していた倉庫は流され、及川氏の自宅も流された。 作業場だった現社屋は被害を免れ、震災直後は付近の住民、配達中のコンビニの配送車も避難してきた。 その中で生まれたのが「SHIRO」というブランド。仕事を失った地域住民の雇用のために立ち上げたブランドだ。 また、地元漁師たちとの会話の中から思いついたのが、水揚げされるカジキマグロの角「吻（ふん）」を使ったデニム。 捨てられてしまうその吻を生地にしてしまったのだ。

「それまでやる意義ってなに？」と尋ねると、及川氏は「だってうちは、気仙沼の会社だから」と微笑んだ。

Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture
Oikawa-denim

Situated on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Oikawa-denim is located in the south part of Kesennuma-city, near the boundary between Minami-sanriku town, Miyagi prefecture. It used to be a kimono shop, started manufacturing jeans in 1981, and established a limited-liability company in 1987. Indeed, Oikawa-denim is the one who manufactured the 501 jeans of “Levi’s 501” utilizing the vintage fabrics stored in U.S.A. for 20 years. Being the first manufacturer using tough linen thread for jeans, the company offers high-quality jeans that are supported with experience and technology. In 2005, they started their new private brand “STUDIO ZERO”. Even though a private brand may cause conflicts with OEM products, the managing director Oikawa decided to promote the private brand, when an Italian buyer happened to ask him “Which brand is your jeans?” during the business trip in Tokyo in 2006. In the next year, they attended an Italian exhibition with the recommendation of the buyer, and the quality of their products have been apricated by the buyers from over the world. This opened new doors in the foreign markets, enabling collaboration with 40 distributors in 6 countries including Italy, Germany and Russia at the peak period. The STUDIO ZERO is purely “Made in Japan”, from the fabrics to the products, based on high quality skills and craftsmanship. In March 2011, the company was damaged by the Great Tohoku Oki earthquake. Tsunami washed out the warehouses and the Oikawa’s own house. The office building had barely avoided the waves, and had accepted refugees and cargo trucks of local stores. “SHIRO” is the brand started at the time, enabling hiring local people who lost their jobs by the disaster. Another original denim utilizes the “bills” of the billfish, stimulated by the conversation with the local fishermen. They turned the bills into fabrics that would be otherwise discarded. When asked “Why you try so much?”, “’Cause we are in Kesennuma.” Oikawa replied with a smile.
